Hi everybody,

This is my first time posting here so bare with me please :).

My problem goes beyond the extent of my skill so i have come to you guys of higher land rover knowledge. :alien:

So i recently burst my timing belt coming back from the beach last week on my 200 disco :doh:.
i have changed the timing belt my self and followed all the instructions on how to re-set the timing as best i could.

As far as i know the timing belt was not changed before now and for some reason after i put everything back together she won't start. the engine turns over but doesn't start and doesn't sound the same while turning over (makes a slightly different sound :eek:).

Iv heard that pushrods (whatever those are? :confused:) could get damaged when a timing belt bursts. would the engine still turn over? could it be that i just have not set the pump gear right?

Id really appreciate any help!

check all pushrods (roll them on a flat surface) and Yu should have used a timing tool kit.

you see. i have no idea what the pushrods are or how to get to them. any threads on this??
 
It's entirely up to you if you want to have a go but by the sounds of it ("not sure what push rods are") I would tend to leave it for someone else but having said that it's not such a brain taxing job.
As already stated have a look at the link but it's only a case of removing the rocker cover and slackening off the rocker shaft(evenly) with that removed the push rods are winking at you from their respective bores.
If you decide to do it yourself it's always a good idea to get a piece of cardboard or similar push them through to keep them in the order they came out ie mark them 1-8 or 1-4 inlet 1-4 exhaust.
If you don't find any deflections in the push rods then it could well mean bent valve/s at the least.
Hope it's just push rods,good luck:decision:
 
i didnt lock it but i had a friend keep an eye on it while fitting the new belt. i also rotated the crank twice and everything lined back up.

i didnt have a special pin to lock the pump gear but i used a drill bit that went in about an inch and some
 
Erm! Do we think it's possible the pump timings 180 degrees out? May appear perfectly timed, push rods may be straight but it still won't go!!!!! You need cyl 1 on its compression stroke!
Just something else to check!!!! Don't like to sound negative but it sounds like you need a hand!
 
Did pump timing stay in the 11 oclock postion at all times. if everything else was on the marks , then it can only be pump ... you did lock the flywheel off didnt you...:)

I do need a hand! thats why im posting. your option sound very positive actually. the pump is closer to a 9:30 position :confused:. should i just rotate it 180 degrees and look for the pin hole?
 
You can!! If you're just changing the belt agreed, but if all timings been lost, ie belt snapped, you can have it injecting on no4 instead of no1. Depends what he's done with the cam! No tool for that one.
It's most likely got bent push rods tho
 
ok so i got it started a short while ago! :banana:

the pump was not in the correct position. now she starts but doesnt sound correct.

the idle isn't too bad but as i start to rev it sounds like its misfiring and shakes a bit more than usual. :confused:

i fiddled with the pump settings a while ago and then tried to set it back after the belt snapped but might have got it wrong. :doh:

could that be the problem or do i still have the timing off?
 
If you're not using the tools the timing could still be off, but you could still have bent something. It's hard to say without being there! If it's a definite misfire on one cylinder I'd be thinking something's bent, if it's just poor running I'd do the timing with the proper tools!

You'd be surprised! As cam belts go they are pretty straight forward and if you've got a basic understanding yes you'll most likely be ok. But some people haven't and it's risking a expensive cock up! So if in doubt I'd say ask for help. You don't have to go to a garage. Beer for a friend or neighbour just may turn out to be a sound investment:) just give it to them afterwards😜
 
ok so i removed the rocker cover and the shaft just like how the video said to do it and the pushrods were amost all bent but everything else seems to be ok...

so just to confirm.. should i just replace the rods and the gasket or is there anything else that i should check before i bolt it back up?

i looked through the slots where the rods go and each of the gold colored things dont look cracked... is there a way to tell for sure or would it be obvious if they were damaged?
