does anyone know what way in the valve thing goes? it fits in fine both ways unfortunately the spring launched it out before I could see.
its a 200tdi steering pump

I think thats actually part of the pump itself, I have changed my 200 def ones 3 times and not come across that part
Looking at the pic the paralell shouldered part looks like its mad to accomodate a spring.
 
It's some sort of valve from in the hole on the side, there is a spring in there that pushes it outwards, I wouldn't have undone the big nut holding it in apart from I got a working pump to replace my dead one with that bit missing so was replacing it using the one from my old pump but it leapt out to fast
 
Sorry Jason Ive just realised its you, I just see no one else has replied so stick my nose in!
I would guess its on the outlet/high pressure pipe? if so set the spring so the pump pressure pushes the piston to compress the spring and let the fluid past.
 
It is on the high pressure side. I'm going to try it this afternoon, can only be one way or another. Hopefully I get it right first time
