so it seems to run fine but it takes about 10minutes of over 50mph to get the engine to warm up at all. so 10min on the motorway will get the temp gauge up to about 1/3. it take 30min to get to work and the temp gauge will still not move and the heater blow cold air.

i was thinking thermostat. any ideas? is it easy to swap?

thanks in advance.

My 200tdi disco is the same, well almost. I've been told that they are all like that but find that hard to believe.
I'm sure that when they came out of the factory, the vehicles would have been quick to warm up.
I've put new thermostat in but it still takes 20miles of ordinary driving to get it warm and I rarely go more that a few miles at a time in the week.
I'm going to flush the heater and radiator out because I suspect that it may be bunged up with sludge.
The reason I think this is because I can drive round town doing stops and starts for half an hour and the heater is only just warm, but if I blast it from the lights up to about 4thousand revs the heater then gets hot for a bit. I'm thinking that the water pump is forcing the water round into the heater at the higher revs.
anyway, when I get some time to do it I'll let you know the outcome.

Thermostat easy if the bolts dont round off, be aware that you need a very tight fitting socket to get them off if you are not going to round them off. Yours may be ok but best to be careful. You can do it without draining the system, just catch the spills in a tray and top up after, well that's what I did anyway.

they really are all like that, unless you've got a V8 - covering up part of the grill and removing the fan really does make a difference this weather, mines toasty within about 5 miles of pottering along

Mine is blasting warm air out the heater after about 3 miles. Temp guage never goes above a quarter of the way up though. They do all run nice and cool though. Better than overheating mind you.

its only because it never used to do it. it was warmer though! i think i will remove the fan for the winter and keep an eye on the temp. so you say a v8 solves it. mmm...
i saw/heard a v8 series 1 drive past the other day. it was great!!

I had the same trouble with my 19J engine, 2.5td. I checked the fan was ok, then pulled the thermostat. It was stuck open. I fitted an 88 instead of an 86, now I have good heat, better running & temp gauge sits at half way. It was a quick & easy job & about £12 for the stat.

I am a newbie to this & don't know what the TDi motor is like.

I was told that the heaters were crap, but wasn't prepared to take that for an answer. Of all the jobs I did, that was the most satisfying!

the 200 tdi in my 90 dosent even need the electric fan switchin on when towing with it , it aways sits at just over half all the time unlike a v8 overheatings always on your mind

Now then....what's up with V8s:p
Mine warms up in about a mile in any weather and sits just below the middle on the gauge even when towing round town. It stays there at 85 on the motorway as well (no trailer) so no problems at all, never had any except when the gauge was faulty and then it was the gauge not the engine. Wonderful 3.5 V8 and it goes like a rocket:D

My TD4 2006 mk1 takes forever to get warm and that is 1/3 on the gauge... have replaced the thermostat and what a job .... but made no difference ... I am in the process of ordering the water temp sensor to see if that will fix it .... what next if that does not work ?

200tdi's do run cool, nothing wrong with it at all. I swapped out my thermostat for a new bearmach one. It takes a little longer to open thus allowing the engine to get up to temp pretty damn quick, somethin that's worth considering if you want your heaters to work within a decent time in winter.

Where abouts did you see this series? And do you know if it was a local one?

I think my dads cousin came down the other day in his.
