200tdi runaway

Hi all quick question before I head up to the yard to strip the top end. Just put a 200tdi that had been sitting for about a year in my 90. Started instantly on first turn over but runs away kicking out blue smoke, so presuming running on its own oil. When I take the intercooler to inlet hose off does the same thing so not turbo seals right? When I loosen the oil Filler cap and start no sign of breathing so rings are kosher right? Which means it could only be cracked head or head gasket right??? Any help appreciated. Harry.
 
Im inexperienced, but, when mine (300tdi) was burning oil, stem seals were also suggested.

It was not them, in my case, and im unsure if enough oil could pass to run away anyhow.

I agree, not seen them cause a runaway. Usually turbo, breathers, or oil level rising in the engine.

I think I've got a set of stem seals somewhere I'll fit them just in case. Cheers

So high oil level would cause it? How would the oil be getting into the chamber?
It just does, common on tractors when the water is running into the oil via bottom of liners.
Have you checked the throttle cable and linkages around the fuel pump. If it has been sitting for a while, maybe something has seized up?
And try pulling the breather pipes off and having a look inside.

Yeah I've checked the fuel pin and pump for seizures because it actually turns off via the key still? But definitely blue smoke. Il check breathers. Cheers
 
If the engine was stored on its side, could there be oil in the head etc. that's working through, rather than an actual problem?

Not much of a runaway if it turns off at the key. Proper runaway fills the whole street with smoke and results in total destruction of engine! :D

Believe me it fills the entire area with smoke, and revs hard enough to cause total destruction. I've only let it run for a few seconds though. Maybe it's a small leak and the fuel is aiding it? I'll have a tinker

Be careful with that, if it starts finding enough oil to sustain running, it wont turn off!
 
Something close to hand to block the air supply may be wise?

If youve only run it for seconds, that really sounds like it residual to me. Seconds does not seem long enough (in my limited experience) to start pressurising oil due to breathers etc.

When mine was leaking through the turbo (due to engine pressurisation - due to blocked breathers) i had to give it about 5 mins of hard driving before the issue. I know yours isnt leaking from there, but it still seems like, if youre lucky, it may clean out on its own?

A tiny amount of oil can cause a lot of smoke - but you need some way of blocking the air, reliably, in case you do actually get a run away situation (ie wont stop when the stop solenoid closes)

It's still turning off by the key after 10 mins?
