hi
I have a 2.5 NA diesel engine in a 110 defender that when I bought the vehicle the dealer said it was a re-con engine of 8000 miles.
well 10months on it's leaking like a sieve.it leaks from the heads, the sump and some other area's,i could put up with all that until last thursday i noticedin the driveway a rather big puddle of engine oil which as it turned out was coming from the plug hole in the flywheel housing!!! bugger!!
now i knew that was'nt good news as the oil seal must have givern up the ghost so i took it to the local landrover guru. he told me not to bother with the seal, sounds like a duff engine, offered me a £1500 engine swop with a secondhand 200TDi. What would you advise me to do? Is it worth spending the money on the engine (is this a good price for it) or do I persevere with the engine I've got now?

Do the swap...but somewhere else. You can get all the bits you need inc a custom pipe kit, clutch, oils and of course an engine for about £400...

I think theres a place on ebay that does the swap for £500 if you dont want to do it yourself..i'll try and find the link later at work.

Another vote for 200tdi and DIY conversion. I'm quite inept with a set of spanners, yet I managed to swap the engines on my own by following the excellent guide in the sticky at the top of this section.

Hi
did i mention that it is a defender 200tdi lump and not a disco lump?
does that make any difference to the price?
are disco engine's a straight fit or is it a cut and shunt affair?

Have a read of the sticky at the top of this thread. There are a handful of small obstacles to overcome when dropping a Disco lump in - but so many people have done the conversion now that there's nothing you'll come up against that won't have been solved hundreds of times before!
A Defender 200tdi will always fetch a premium as it does drop straight in. If money isn't an issue then go for it. If (like the rest of us!) you run your Landy on a budget, get a decent Disco engine and do the conversion yourself. The only "special" parts I bought were an exhaust downpipe and intercooler pipes - there's chap on eBay who sells them and they work very well.
