So I want to fit a 200TDi in my 109 Series 3. I've seen posts on this before but I wanted to make my own to ask my own things :D. I want to replace the 2.25 Petrol. But being an amateur I don't know if it will all fit together, prop shafts, gearbox etc. Will the 200TDi just fit in, without any huge chassis modification. The engine mounts I'm guessing will need to be changed but that doesn't matter. I've seen that the turbo hits the chassis and people have notched out a groove for the turbo to sit in, but I'm not to keen on changing the integrity of the actual chassis. One last question, is it easier to fit a 300TDi instead. Any help appreciated. Cheers :D

Hi. The 200Tdi will fit into a series III with very few mods. The engine mounts from the 2.25 will bolt onto the 200tdi block. If you use an engine from a defender, you will not need to modify the chassis, as the turbo is mounted higher. The clutch pressure plate from the 2.25 petrol can be used. There is a good guide here "200Di" diesel conversion for Series Land Rovers - by Glencoyne 4x4 (Thetford) as to what mods are recommended to the flywheel housing. I think the biggest problem may be the exhaust. you may need to fabricate your own downpipe from the manifold. The 300Tdi will fit into a series engine bay, but this engine was designed to mate with the R380 gearbox, this will require much more work to be done to make it fit the LT77.

The 300 will also cure the turbo problem in a LWB. It is mainly because the chassis is deeper top to bottom and it gets in the way :D Chassis notching can be done to make the Discovery 200 fit with it's turbo but opinion is divided. (picture of required notch below)

A 300 intercooler will make the pipe work easier. You will need to

i) relocate the battery and remove the battery tray.
ii) make up a fuel return for the injector pump
iii) find a place to mount the air filter box or find something that fits.

Attached are a few pictures that might also help.....bear in mind that I fabricated the entire exhaust from the turbo, 80% of it is modded Discovery exhaust system)
