Hi all

my other halfs Disco is not very well, it says in the manual that the gear stick should be sprung and held between 3rd & 4th when in neutral, his is between 1st & 2nd and is returning to there when in neutral, its also gone very hard to get into gear used to be very very easy, now just feels heavy and not going in 1st time sometimes

What could have gone wrong??

hi there my 200 tdi sits between 3rd and fourth when in neutral and used to slip into gears but now its occasionally stiff especially after a long run when the oil is warm and engageing reverse is a bitch really stiff il keep an eye on this post as someone will give some info

The bias plate at the top of your gearbox has snapped. It's a really common issue. The bias springs that keep the gear lever between 3rd and 4th have nothing to work against so the lever springs over to 1st and 2nd.

The part is about a fiver and fitting is an easy but fiddly job.

Cheers

Andy

hi

thanks for that, does the whole centre console need to be taken off or is there a section i can take off??

if i need to remove the whole thing is it a pain to get off and then back on?? never had a 200 off before

90's are sooo much easier!!!!

Hi there, taking the console out of a Tdi 200 is a piece of cake and should only take about 15-20 mins tops.

Start by taking out the radio, then empty the cubby box if you have one. Lift off the rubber mats in the box and at the base of the 2 gear levers.

Undo the 4 screws at the base of the box and the 2 screws at the front end of the console.

Unhook the gearlever gaiter bases and undo the bolt that holds the main gear lever in position.

Prise out the window switch panel, remove the split pin on the handbrake and remove the pin, swing the handbrake lever upwards and remove the last screw.

Lift the console out the way reveals rubber sound absorbing stuff which you lift away then you should seal a large black rubber membrane thing held in place with rivets or self-tappers. Remove the outside edge fixings and the ones holding a small square metal frame at the base of the main gearlever, then lift the membrane away.

Now you should be able to see the gearbox. There is a square ally cover held in place by about 3 screws, remove it and you are at the place where the plate is - remove the old one , put the new one in and reassemble everything.

One & a half hours tops.

Cheers & good luck

Thats pretty much it but I would like to add fit the plate and set the gear stick as mentioned so that 3rd & 4th are selectable with no left or right bias and then go for a drive and see how the shift feels. Sometimes with wear that has taken place within the gearbox selectors the plate may need moving either way to get it just right. Nice to do this BEFORE putting it all back together.

regards
