200tdi Coolant Leak / Loose bolt from block!

Well I went out to start her up this morning after not using her since last Sunday at a pay and play. And won't start. Something is shorting out / dead battery due to alternator not charging anyway thats another issue.

Eventually got it started using jump pack, open the bonnet and there is a steady drip of coolant onto the top of the axle casing. It's coming from just under the fan belt pulley. Then I noticed something more alarming, a long bolt sticking out of the engine and occasionally catching on the fan. So switched her off at this point.

This is a photo of said bolt. (just above the middle of photo) What is this? How has it come loose? And would that be why the coolant is leaking?!

looks like a water pump bolt,loctite it and wind it back in at a guess

The bolt was unrelated, it was the bolt which holds the aux belt tensioner in at the bottom.
Got some better photos of where I think the leak is coming from. I think it is coming from this bolt, which I can't get a socket on too see if is loose as is not enough clearance. Well try and get a spanner on it tomorrow. There is some coolant above this bolt though so I'm not sure, but no holes or anything above this bolt where it could be coming out

Anyone know what this bolt is/does and could this be cause of coolant leaking?

if i remember right 1 of the water pump bolts is a bit longer than the rest,it may be that that is leaking but couldnt rightly say.

yeh I think it is one of the water pump bolts having had a look at some diagrams. So maybe need new water pump or water pump gasket

Whole thing is a nightmare to get to, gonna have to invest in one of those special spanners to get fan off!

Try a normal 30mm spanner (I think its that size) first. I got mine off ok with one.. Worth a try before you go buying special tools.
Looks like yer gasket has gone to me, but I ain't no expert..

take the fan shruod off and just use a normal spanner...,new pump wont break the bank,take yer couple of hours,go steady with the bolts as they can get stuck,soak em with bit o release gas and clean the heads to get a good contact.there quite long and can snap if forced...

Spanner size is 32mm and its a left hand thread. Ya cant take the fan cowl off easily if the viscous fan is still in place. A cranked viscous fan spanner is cheap enough on ebay.
If the bolts have been put in correctly using locktite then you will need to shock 'em with a hammer and maybe a bit of heat.
Dont shear them off though of you'll have big problems!

Well I don't have a 32mm spanner so may as well buy the proper tool! Thanks for the advice, will try not to shear any bolts

That was my biggest problem when I did my timing belt. Someone before me had sheared one of the bolts on the water pump. I was never able to remove it n trying to get the timing cover off was a bastid.

If its sheared off flush then its a case of drilling out and re-tapping which is a pig of a job. If there is a bit of bolt projecting out you may be lucky and get it out with a stilsons, either way, a real bastid of a job

Once I eventually managed to get the cover off I had about an inch long it of bolt/stud sticking out. Could I move it.. Could I fcuk. I tried everything and every tool I could find that might do it, but it never budged, so I put it all back with it still there.
The water pump leaked a bit from there when I first fired the car up again, but it stopped and hasn't leaked since..

try is not good enough,

you will not shear any bolts luke use the force....
