I'm just finishing up a 200Tdi conversion on an '87 petrol Station Wagon and just want to check I've got the wiring right as I had some funny gremlins earlier on.

I connected up the main positive from the battery to the starter motor like the original motor was connected and thought I'd check the lights work but the my don't. So with the ignition off no key in push the light switch forward and the low fuel light and oil pressure light come on and if you flick the indicator switch the trailer warning beeper beeps.

I think it's a bad earth (ie the engine to chassis). Am I correct in attaching the main pos feed to the starter?

yes main battery wire is fitted to starter and vehicle feeds from there too

Sorted it now I retrieved the timing gear to battery earth lead off the disco and attached it to the steering box on my one ten and it's sorted now.
