200tdi blue smoke?

Hi all,

I own a 90 200tdi, it's been stood for a good period of time now as I bought it as a project and I have no idea of the history. It idles lovely and runs sweet as anything, however, under hard acceleration it throws blue smoke out of the exhaust. Now, I'm thinking of simply just doing an oil change and seeing if it cures it, but, I thought it might be the turbo, however there is no excess free play or signs of any oil leaks from the turbo.
I also spoke to another mechanic and he said it might be either worn rings or even sticky rings. In other words, I'm in a complete scramble to know where i stand with it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Try a good engine flush and get it warm before changing the oil.

Injector cleaner may help and if it has been stood far a long time then cambelt should be changed.

Blocked air filter would be black smoke so it does sound like sticky rings or maybe valve stem oil seals may be perished.

rusty bores would be more likley if issue is due to been stood ,you can rule out turbo by removing cooler to inlet hose and running it

a bit off brake fluid down the bores can unstick sticky rings, make sure you get most of it back out again before running! And do it before you change the oil

200 tdi like the 300 is a pretty agricultural engine, mine smokes a little blue when cold then disappears, smokes black then under any acceleration, put mine down to rings as it's passing a little oil too, very cheap on parts these engines, my garage mate built his 200 engine for £400, as it's been stood though as said above, a good engine flush and oil change and maybe injector cleaner, check air filter and give it some good long runs see how you go, inexpensive to sort if not if your handy with a spanner
