hey peeps.
Got a problem with what I thought was my starter motor, But today me and a friend attack it.
After we got the starter motor off n had a look at it there was nuffin at all up with it. We but jump leads on it and it span as normal.
when we put it back on still nuffin! confused.com

Anyone any idea?

Ignition switch?.....earth lead?.....soleniod?....connections?...will give you a start[ sorry 'bout the pun!]
 
My bet is the main engine earth lead or the starter brushes.
If the brushes are on their way out they will spin the motor with no load (ie. jump leads whilst off the engine) but not when you are trying to crank a high compression diesel engine.

what do I need to do if its the bushes?

My first thought was as Shifty's, poor earth but there would be something cos there should be even a poor earth somewhere.

Never seen a LR starter so im probably talking out of turn here but if it has replacable brushes its an easy job if you can get em or even shape some to fit.

Otherwise a motor re-winders or poss some other specialist, failing that a replacement.

When you say "nuffin" do you hear a heavy(ish) clunk from the starter's solenoid or just completely nothing when you turn the key?

all there I can hear is a click which sounds like its coming from the fuse box.

Turning your ignition key fully to "engine start" puts power down the ignition switch red/white wire and energises the starter relay (as you can hear this click then it has to be assumed that the relay is fine). The energised relay in turn puts power down another red/white wire which is directly connected to the spade terminal on the starter solenoid (the solenoid is piggy backed on top of the starter) The solenoid throws the dog into the flywheel ring gear before the motor spins (hence pre-engaged starter motor). If you cannot hear the clunk of the solenoid doing it's thing then:
Check that power (12v) is received at the red/white wire connected to the starter solenoid as the key is fully turned.
If it is then then replace the whole starter motor as the solenoid seems now duff.
If no power is seen then replace the ignition relay.
 
Sorted it. Got my mate down who knows his starter motors unlike me, it's all fine now:) thanks for your help guys
