The 300TDi rear drive suffers from donut probs. I know of at least one person that has changed theirs from a 300TDi to a 200TDi without the donut.
Is the 200TDi a better system - or is it a bodge?
What is the purpose of the donut?

what are your thoughts on this?

I have a 300tdi, and have just changed the donut for the second time this year. Yes it's lifted, but twice in a year?!?

I have access to a 200tdi which i will remove the rear prop, fit new UJs and drive flange and swap it over. I just hope a new UJ will last longer than another donut..

Conversely I've never worried about or had problems of any kind with the donut, mine had HD springs which effectively lift it about an inch.

I've had the Disco since 55k now with 123k ish, 1 donut change when I changed the diff just 'cos I wanted to ... but the old one still looks brand new and is always carried now for a spare!

Obviously it seems that there is a small window of operation for the rubber donut. Stray too far outside of this and you increase it's wear rate expontially.

The rubber donut was introduced to reduce vibration into the cabin via the drivetrain.

IME/IMHO the 200 UJ style of prop shaft is by far the better of the two.

One donut change since I bought the 300, but this was after shreading it on some rocks.
I always thought the doughnut was some sort of cushdrive like motorbikes have.

Whole point of the donut is to kill the vibrations that the passengers feel from the rear axle it does make a difference.

If your car is wearing them out quick check your rear suspension, mine is cracking all ready after being fitted 2 months, think my rear bushes need doing, angle of attack on the diff is a bit too steep.

To be honest if your motor is lifted at all I would get rid of it and replace it with a double UJ off a 200tdi, you do NOT want that thing to break when your on the move.
