2008 Defender Puma oil leak

In the last few days I have noticed oil on my drive. It is coming from the front nearside of the engine. Its location is directly below the engine oil filler as if I have been topping up with oil and spilt a bit, although this is not the case.

The oil is sprayed around the nearside of the engine compartment as well as on the underside of the bonnet. This must be as a result of the leaking oil coming into contact with pulleys and being flung off?

The leak seems to be more prevalent when driving the vehicle or at least the leak is more noticable having parked the vehicle after driving it. After a day or so no more oil leaks. I have discovered this as a result of placing a sheet of white perspex under the engine while parked.

Just beneath the oil filler is a belt driven (presumably a pump) with WABCO written on it.

Any ideas?

Hi mike it's the gasket on vacuum unit always go it's the same gasket as a transit which go the same way,easy to change.

I googled the problem after posting on here the other day and discovered it was probably the vaccum pump. Although I think the pump is on its way out as I have developed a new noise under the bonnet.

What does this pump do?

What might be the consequences of not attending to it urgently?

Is the leaking oil engine oil?

Oil is engine oil ,the pump is for the vacume for the brakes ,my transit was leaking oil at the pump joint I dimantled it not a very big job and sealed it carefully with ford sealent used for the timing case ,that sorted it

Phoned a main dealer who advised me they always fit a new pump as well as a gasket in these circumstances. Gasket £5 New pump £250 But they had neither in stock.

Then phoned Joe Bloggs Land Rover independent one man band down the road who advises the problem is ALWAYS the gasket - not the pump and he had 2 gaskets in stock.

Problem solved.
