2006 Vogue

Just been offered a 2006 Vogue.
What should I look out for in major faults.
Hasn’t got a main dealer service history but a local garage has maintained it.
Have had 2 Land Rover series and a 2 door early rangy and a late eighties Efi in the past. Just thinking about dipping my toe back in the Landy scene. And I don’t have deep pockets

Go for a p38 RR they are a lot cheaper to repair than the newer L322 and dont rust like them ether

£3.6k , mileage 89k, 12 months mot, surface rust rear offside wheel arch, recent air bag on suspension replaced front off side. No warning lamps or messages or fault codes

That's a lot of money for that car

If there is surface rust showing on wheel arch times that by 10 as to how much rust, and why only one air bag, if ones gone other is not far behind
its low miles but if a td6 then about the time the gearbox wants a recon

TD6 it'll be due a gearbox, and as said rust on the arch is only the tip of the iceberg, usually the sills and boot floor are next.

Rusty earth points, tired g/box, rear sills and arches, lcm gremlins, sticking headlight wipers, radio and satnav issues, interior damp, wet rear inner wings.
A bloody nice car but I wouldn't own one.

No deep pockets? No hope then, that car will take what you have got and then come back for more. As others have said, go for a good P38, comparatively simple electronics, cheap parts and much easier to fix.

No one seems to have a good word for them .Are they that crap then??
Should never have got rid of my early two door 30 odd years ago then. Mind you that had more welding material holding it together than chassis

Its not that they cant be a good car.
But you did ask what to look for as possible wallet openers. To be honest the cost you have stated is high for a car that needs any work, at that it should be pristine and FSH including gearbox services, even then still no guarantee the gearbox would hold up they seem to be very poor.

There are some on here that have them and they love them to bits, but most have had a battle to get to that point.
Many have skipped maintenance during the life due to costs, Which sooner or later comes back to bite, usually the next owner.

IMO based on experience of a car belonging to A . N. Other now disposed of, they are pretty poor, electronic problems often caused by water ingress and the GM gearbox that has an 80K miles life expectancy mean they are money pits. There are many other problems that I could list.

Apart from this they are ok

If you can do your own spannering they can be run on a budget, if not expect big bills. They are great cars to drive if you can put up with a satnav that's so far out of date it's pretty useless, a head unit that is so integrated with other systems you're pretty stuck with it. The TD6 gearbox has a bad reputation but mine has been reconditioned (£1500) and it's been fine since but, I drive sensibly and don't tow anything.

Given the rust and mileage you are probably looking at another £2k - £3k to make it into a nice motor, if that's all that's wrong. Remember it was probably around £80k when new.

I know there supposed to be sealed for life and about as much use as a chocolate tea pot but I’ve heard you can remove sump plate and flush them and replace screen filter. I regularly replace the screen filter on my Buick Auto box

I believe it's more that the torque converter breaks up as it wears and contaminates the gearbox.

It's the torque convertor lock up clutch which, stupidly IMO, is designed to slip as an intermediate stage before lock up.
Plus the valve block is made from cheese.
