2006 MK1td4 freelander

Hi my name is John,I am having trouble with my 2006 td4 MK1 freelander "so far" it has been starting in the morning but after that it's a hit and miss affair, the engine will fire up but only for a few seconds then cuts out so I have to keep trying until it starts but it has got to a point where it s as good gone, I have had it with three different reputable mechanics but no one can diagnose the problem, I have been assured that it's not the pump, everyone tells it's fuel problem not electrics any ideas would be much appreciated
