Greetings Range Rover folks I don't often frequent this end of the forum but I have just had a mate on the phone to say he's been offered a 2006 Vogue for £1000.
The reason for the price is that apparently the previous owner changed the gearbox oil when it was the wrong temp. and knackered it. He took it to a specialist who told him it would cost 3.5k to put right. Really I want to know how is it possible to destroy a gearbox by just changing the oil?-bear in mind I'm from the agricultural section.
The other thing is, is there an easy/cheaper solution to the problem, my mate was a bit vague as to the problem but reckons the guy is still driving it about locally.

I think the temperature is more about getting the oil level correct, too cold and it could be over filled. Depending on how much it has been driven, I doubt that would knacker the gearbox. You don't say what engine it is, fo more information you need to specify the engine as petrol and diesels have different auto boxes on some years.

Point your mate in the direction of the first line of my signature block ;) There is no such thing as a cheap L322.

There is a phenomenom (spelling??) known as new fluid syndrome.....

If the box was originally filthy and had never had a fluid filter change previously....dirt and debris can accumulate in nocks and crannies of the box and sit there harmlessly minding its own business never doing anything except sitting there.

ATF is a very good detergent, and during a fluid change (especially a full mega-flush) this can dislodge the harmless dirt etc and dump it all en-mass into the new fluid and cause all kinds of issues, from wearing out clutch plate to gumming up valve block galleries.

It is not common, but also it is not so rare either and this box could have been one of the unlucky ones.....

Are there any symptoms that can be elaborated on i.e. it will go into gear but needs the nuts revved off it to move, or it wont shift gears, or won;'t go into drive at all.....etc ???

If it's the 6HP26 and you put the wrong fluid in it..

Then well..

You'll **** it..

Also if you under fill it, you'll **** it..

Changing the fluid without any clue as to what they were doing was a fools move tbh..

All the info for the fluid change is in my sig and also in the tech section of the Range Rover subsection..

The full and drain procedure has to be followed to the letter.

What are the symptoms?

If he's still driving it, he'll well and truly screw it over..

The initial fill is done cold, then you run it throgh the gears intill a temp of 35-40c is achieved then you crack the filler plug loose and top off 'tll it runs out.

Run it through the gears again, check if oil flows out retorque the filler nut and drive away..

Oh and btw don't shut the engine off with the filler plug out. ;)

Thanks for the info I shall pass it on, tbh if it was me I'd take a punt on it but then I've got a more sympathetic wife than he does:D
