2005 Fred 1 main beam not working

My dad's just got a 2005 td4 and discovered the main beam isn't working. Fresh bulbs, fuses checked and I've also changed the stalk for a new one as that seemed to be a common fault but nothing. I've checked the relay and as far as I can tell the relay is fine, but it's starting to wind me up now as all the other headlight faults are side or dip beam!

Are you looking at the correct relay?
Does it click when putting main beam on?
That would prove the switch is working.
From there the relay could still be faulty, could swap with known good one.

There's no click from any relay when turning the lights on, I swapped the relay out with another and made no difference

Each side high beam has a separate fuse.
As you've had the stalk switch out, the signal wire for high beam is blue and white. That then goes to the relay terminal 86. If you can check with a meter you have 12v at terminal 86 of the relay when main beam flash that would prove stalk is ok.
(High beam relay is f9 in the engine bay.
If you're not getting 12v at the relay check stalk and cable, if you are getting 12v check the relay has earth on 85.
A direct short across relay terminals 30 and 87 should power the lights.
30 is 12v and 87 goes to each fuse f20 and f18 for each side light.)
Take it in stages though, it's easy to introduce more problems. Check for power when switched at relay first. Do the same check for flash and on permanent.

If you swapped the stalk for a used one you may have swapped bad for bad. Been there before and it's very frustrating.

Do the dip beams go out, when main beams are selected?

No they don't, there's nothing. No main beam light on the dash, no relay clicking nothing.

I'm not saying you are stupid, like me, but one time I changed the bulb on the Toyota about 4 times before I realised I was changing the wrong bulb in the headlamp fixture. Make sure you have the right bulb in your sights, lol. That day cut my knuckles up like a cheese grater on the rampage.

So, I know it's been a long while since I started this thread but I've still not sorted the problem and I've found a new one.
Ive gone through the check list that J D put up as well as I can, I put power across R1 to short the circuit but rather than power up the lights, it turned on the cigarette lighter!
I'm hoping that I'm doing something wrong as it's due it's test in a couple of weeks.
I was going to bypass it all and put it on a separate relay from the switch as it has 12v at it but it doesn't stay live so I don't think it will work.
