2004 V8 petrol gearbox whine

whines only when cold
then goes off after 15 mins still drives fine &changes fine any ideas please ?????

Try the easiest things first - could just be low fluid level (only use Mobil/Esso LT71141) causing the pump to suck air when cold, or maybe a partially blocked filter (again, causing the pump to cavitate)? A filter & gasket costs around £40. I'm assuming that the whining noise is proportional to engine speed?
