Hi, I have a Freelander TD4 2004. I wondered if anyone could help or has had similar issues?

When starting the car hot or cold it can take anything between 1-5 times to start it up! On the cold start up it kicks out some white smoke then runs ok.

Also when I put my foot down on the accelerator the revs go up the car doesn’t speed up and the revs drop back down. Sounds like I have revd the car in neutral.

Any advice would be great!!

Sounds like you possibly have some bad glow plugs and a slipping clutch, but I would also be checking the EGR valve and air intake manifold. A quick resistance check on the glow plugs would be a decent place to start.

Would it be the glow plugs if it still has a bad start up even when warm? I have cleaned the EGR valve a few times now, it does tend to get clogged up very quickly.

The symptoms sounded like it could be the fuel pump with the poor performance, fuel efficiency & bad start up?

Check low and high fuel pressure. Also do a leak down test on the injectors. What can happen is the fuel leaks into the engine while switched off and then a start is difficult and smokes white. What mileage have injectors done? Does sound like clutch too. Bad combo for costs I'm afraid. Injectors can be reserved for about £150 each. Clutch around £600 to £750.

Yes, fuel pressure checks first. If high pressure looks wrong, it may be the connectors to the sensor which is prone to corrosion, or could be the O rings in the regulator on the fuel pump. Both common problems and an uprated loom is available for the sensor and O rings dirt cheap. Low pressure will likely be the lift pump.

Then you can check the injectors.

Dunno what pressures you are looking for on the fuel, but there are numbers on various threads that hopefully you can search for - depending on year of car, you may also need a Freelander specific diag tool rather than something generic ODBII.

My money is on the fuel pump being an issue and possibly further problems on the fuel lines

Some great guidance above though, hope you get it sorted as the TD4 can be a great engine

Yeah....

sometimes I turn the key and nothing at all. I have to do it a few times to get any movement from the engine.

Sometimes it cranks but doesn’t start up just chugs. Normally starts on 2-4th then attempt

Sometimes it starts just fine

I was thinking fuel injector too. I have seen the parts online for around £50 & quoted £50 labour by a friend mechanic. Could be worth the £100 to find out?

Thanks for your help guys btw

Nick

Others may correct me, but if its not turning over, then its nothing to do with injectors of fuel pressure.

Could be the immobiliser - when you turn the key does the alarm LED turn on solid? (the LED that flashes when you lock the doors with the remote)

Might also be the ignition switch. Not the barrel or lock, the plastic switch on the end of the ignition barrel that all the wires plug into. This is known to fail, and fail randomly.
