2004 Range Rover Petro- Engine Canbus error

Then time to get on diagnostics - you say CANbus error - does this mean you have had it on diagnostics?

On the CAN, messages are sent and received on the same pieceof wire, once a message has been sent, it goes to all the ECUs on the CAN and they all read the message and if it is not for them they just ignore it and pass it on.

Trouble is, it is a two way communication and if a packet of information gets stuck in an ECU (for instance the power suddenly went out and the ECU hadn't shutdown correctly) then the packet sits there when the system powers back up an it jams the line of communication.

This can be relieved by unplugging each ECU in turn until the CAN error disappears.

Also, the chief culprit of this type of error is the headlamp levelling ECU in the A pillar (UK passanger side)...unplugging this can often reset the issue.

Goooooooooooooogle is your friend, it is quite a common issue.
 
All as your man Saint says and sometimes running it through the clearing faults procedure a few times can fix it, although 4 is a few I guess.
If it was mine, and i wouldn't recommend using it with abs inactive in the current weather situation, I would be using it for a bit to see if it clears.
I had an ABS sensor fault that kept putting my brakes on if i tried to move and also gave EAS, HDC, ABS inactive bongs of doom and I kept clearing and driving it slowly and clearing it and then it gave in and shut up and has not been back in years.

Andy, this dude is in Sunny California....
 
holidaychicken, You're on the right track. Someone mentioned that it could be the battery or the alternator. Both of them were replace less than a year ago and just had them tested and they tested good. That test might be faulty so I'll have it tested by another shop.
