Hello

I have a 2004 model 1.8 petrol Freelander,which has developed the following fault;

When the ignition is turned off, the cooling fan starts up and remains on for between 10 and 30 seconds , it started a few weeks ago and happens no matter what the outside temperature is or how long or far the car has been driven.

The temp. gauge is reading normal and the car does not seem to be over heating.

Any ideas on what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated.

The K Series has 2 temp sensors - 1 for the temp gauge on the dash and another that the ECU uses - its the ECU that turns the fans on. So I'd change that sensor first - they're quite cheap.

Thank you for the reply.
Could you tell me whereabouts this sensor is please, and what it is called for when I order it.
Many thanks

Its called the temperature sensor and its on the engine coolant system - if I remember rightly its the 2 wire sensor not the 1 wire one (for the gauge).

If you want to test that everything else appears to be working properly and with the car cold, you can disconnect the sensor and turn the ignition on. The fans should come on.

There are 2 types of coolant sensors for the K -series1.8 depending on which ECU is fitted.
The 2001 onwards MEMS3 with coil packs above the plugs uses a single sensor with a black plug.
You will see a blanked 2nd stub on the coolant elbow where the 2nd sensor screws in on the early engine.
The pre 2001 MEMS 1.9 engine with distributor cap has a brown ECU coolant temp sensor and blue sensor for the dash temp gauge.

Thank you for the advice.
I did as you suggested, unplugged the sensor with the engine cold started the engine, after a second or 2 the fan kicked in at full speed, I then switched of engine re-connected sensor lead, re-started engine the fan stayed off.
Would you say it was that sensor that is faulty. I will get one and change it any way.
Many thanks for the help, I will keep you posted
