Good morning all,
I very recently returned to the LandRover fold when I purchased a very nice Black, late 2003 Freelander TD4 Serengeti Automatic. For the past two years I have been driving a Toyota Rav4 2L petrol manual a good reliable car but very THIRSTY! Having previously owned 3 Freelander TD4s, 2 autos and 1 manual I am concerned about the MPG I am getting from my new acquisition, which I estimate to be somewhere in the region of 23 MPG, granted most of that is short hops in and around town but my last Freelander was returning at least 28/30 MPG doing the same sort of trips. There are definitely no leaks from anywhere and the Brakes are not binding, but it did have work carried out by a Garage in December 2015 to "Rectify Diesel Leak from Injector Leak Off Pipes". Now as I am no mechanic, and a bloke over 70 years of age and definitely do not wish to go scrambling underneath any motor vehicle, is there any simple test/visual inspection I can do to see if the work was successful? Or is this simply the MPG i can expect from an older car? Any help, advice would really be appreciated.
thanks

My TD4 auto returns about 28 Mpg on our Cornish A&B roads.
I'd be checking that the MAF is in good condition and only use good quality fuel. Supermarket fuel is bad for the TD4 and will affect it's MPG.
You'd smell diesel if you were loosing enough affect MPG.

Hi Nodge,
Is checking the MAF something, even a complete idiot like me when it comes to mechanics can do
David
If the MAF has done more than about 50,000 Miles then it's probably worth replacing it tbh. A new OE Bosch MAF can be had for about £100. It takes 30 minutes or so to change if you are good with tools. I tried a £25 MAF from Ebay which seemed to work, however I removed it again as I had a misfire. I suspect the misfire was a bad fuel issue so I'll be refitting the cheap MAF, when I have time.
