Hi all,
I recently bought a LHD TD5 with (amongst other things) a dashboard fault. When you first turn on the ignition all lights up as normal, gauges read & it settles down, but when the key is turned or the ignition is left on for a few seconds it all goes blank, except for the SRS light. The mileometer goes from a strong reading to being very feint & not reading correctly. The engine starts & runs fine & all the other switches & accessories behave normally. The night illumination also works OK. I have replaced the whole dash unit, had the BCU checked & checked the earth point under the carpet & all seems correct.
I have also checked with a meter that the earths at the dash end are OK & there is power on the two green feeds (fuse & dash ends) & there is, whether the dash is working or not.
Every other electrical item is working just fine but I am planning a long trip soon & have run out of ideas! Anyone out there got any ideas?
Thanks.

welcome.
not sure about the mileometer but regarding the SRS light, there is an electrical plug connector under the drivers seat (in a RHD anyway). the wires can break or loosen causing the SRS on the dash to light up. worth checking.

Thanks Bobdog, the SRS light does go out when the engine is started as it should but it is the only one that stays on with the ignition only when all the others including the fuel & temp gauge just die.

Thank you! I found a previous post on the same issue that sierrafery replied to & checked connector 18 & 19. Power does not change when the fault occurs - full vehicle voltage at all times. This indicates a fault with the instrument pack itself. I bought another used one to try from the UK & it seems to have the same fault though.
Any ideas of what causes the failure?
My biggest problem is that a UK unit is fairly cheap but my speedo is in kms so not so easy to find!

Update. After sorting out all the other non related problems such as warped manifold etc I spent time messing with the problem & gave up in the end.
I took it to a local vehicle electrical specialist & left it with them.
Two weeks later they had found the problem! It was....
...the fuel gauge sender unit in the tank!
They cut one of the wires & everything except the gauge operated correctly.
I replaced the whole in-tank assembly & reconnected the wire & all is well!
The sender unit had become detached from the rest of the pump so it may have been damaged in some way.
Now for the ACE problem...
