Guys can anyone tell me if the 2000 4.0 Ltr V8 P38 has a kickdown cable or is it run by an ECU. Reason i ask is that on mine the first stage kickdown is fine but on the 2nd stage kickdown (full beans) it drops down and engine revs rise and gets to about 5000 rpm but wont change up unless i back off the throttle a little. The gearbox has had a recent gearbox oil and filter change. I have seen on here that new oil can dislodge old crud and block the system. If there is no cable to adjust can you flush the box to clear the system so i can use the full kickdown facility. everyday driving is fine and box functions in everyother function perfectly or is it a new ECU or box rebuild ???

It's electronic - no cable.

I had a similar issue where on kickdown mine would just keep banging off the limiter and never change up until the throttle was released a bit. That was caused by the transfer ECU being burned. Check yours goes into high/low OK and remove the transfer box ecu and take a look inside.

Ok guys checked the box this morning and 4 wheel drive hi and low works as it should amber lights on console, bleeping sound and notification on dash panel. Any other ideas would be appreciated

It does the same in sport and normal

You might try some diag on it. Maybe throttle position sensor problem. When kick down is used throttle fuel demand is far greater than the MAP will allow. So the engine ECU asks the gearbox ECU to lower the gear ratio to raise the RPM to accommodate the fuel MAP. And thus give acceleration.

Hi Wammers, with referance to the possibility of the Throttle position sensor playing up with the current Gearbox problem, who is the best place to get them from. Dont like useing stealers as they are a bloody rip off but understand that at times there the best place to go to. Looking at your comments this evening if all the do gooders and we must help these innocent people brigade lived in kent they would,nt be so bloody quick to go on about it. Dover Margate now almost no go areas for us non Muzzies !!:D:D

You might try Island 4x4 in Maidstone. Take the VIN number with you. But diag would be better first rather than shelling out and it's not the problem. You can spend lots of pennies guessing it may just need adjusting.
