200 tdi won't start - help

Hi all,

I've had the new toy for three weeks now - for the first two I used it daily and it never missed a beat. However, after being away for a week it won't start.

Initially the engine didn't turn - I suspected that the battery was dead. The battery got a quick charge and then the engine turned but wouldn't start.

Clearly something is draining the battery when left - I suspect the radio but I can sort that.

When the the ignition key is in position 2 the break and battery lights are on but nothing else - should the yellow one be on? (pre-heater?)

What should I do next? I'm new to landys so please keep it in layman's terms!
 
yes you should get ur glow wire come on for a bout 10 seconds if this isnt coming on thtas why it isnt starting get someone to turn ignition on then you check feed to the glow plugs under the bonnet if no feed this is what your propblem is and the battery too possibly
 
well without glow plugs isnt goign to help is it especially how cold it is atm if they wasnt needed why would they fit them ?? and battery too

ignoring the plugs - does it now, with a known good battery, turn over at a reasonable speed and still not start ?
 
nathan5346 - any ideas how the battery is?

I'm in York not Iceland but the weather has certainly got a bit colder.

The preheat comes on for a few seconds, however if you listen you can hear the relay click if its working a few seconds after turning the ignition on. It sounds like the battery is knackered tho and turning the engine over too slow. Most of these engines will start without a preheat, but if the engine is a bit dodgy then its gona need a heat. Take the air intake pipe off, its the one from the air filter box to the engine or the lid and filter out and give it a little squirt of wd40 as its being turned over and it should start to fire up, give it a run and see how you get on from there.

If the preheater is broke then you need to check its getting a feed to the heater plugs on the cylinder head, if you dont have a meter then a couple of wires on a bulb holder should do.

most 90/110s which have had 200s plonked in usually take the GP feed direct off the ignition (as the original TD does) so there's no relay to listen for, unless they've had the GP timer relay fitted as well

this is a recorded message - a reasonably healthy 200/300 wont need the plugs to start, so i'd be looking to see if there's actually fuel getting through before trying it on addictive start assistance fluids
