Evening, All.

The OS front wheel bearings on my 1993 200 Tdi 90 disintegrated spectacularly the other day. I'm looking to replace them and wondered if anyone can recommend a kit. I know I'll need bearings and races, but a kit containing the other essentials would be handy. I also understand Timken bearings are a good choice. Is it a good idea to do both sides while I'm at it?

I am just building up a shopping list for a 200tdi axle 94 onwards and have settled on his kit.
The part number with (A) at the end is the one with Timken bearings as I rang up to check today.
Not sure about your year but you should find the right kit here and ring them to double check.

Ok, I had a go at this today and failed. Everything came apart easily enough and the new races went in well. However, when it came to fitting the seal on the inner bearing side things went wrong. I could never get it to the 4mm depth stipulated and it never sat against the bearing. Consequently when I put the hub back on the stub axle not enough thread was showing to get the first nut on. Either I’ve been sold the wrong kit (car is LA935720) or I’m doing something wrong, which is perfectly possible, of course. Anyway, any suggestions as the car is off the road and the seal is knackered!

Also, I need a new washer: the one that you bend over the flats of the inner nut. What’s this called, please? One didn’t come with my kit and the old one is not reusable.
 
It was very hard to get in and got damaged in the process. I could never get it to meet with the upper surface of the bearing, such that there was a gap between the two and the bearing could “flap” around. Should it meet the bearing?

no it shouldnt touch the bearing, you just need to fit hub square so as not to tilt bearing, sometimes takes a couple of trys
 
Following this with interest as i have started cleaning and painting all the bits of my axle that I have on the bench, got all the bits from various suppliers and soon it will be time to rebuild........ I am sure I will also run into some problems! Sorry I can’t help as I am doing this for the seconded time only, last time was 25 years ago........ keep us informed.
 
Right, I might have worked it out. I’ve just noticed that there is a collar at the base of the stub axle, and it appears the width of this is is the same as the distance I am misssing when it comes to pushing the hub home. Perhaps I need to be more forceful to seat the hub on the stub axle. Nonetheless, the seal would not go in at all easily, which concerned me. I used an old race. Would polishing the inner surface with emery cloth help? Also, emery cloth on the stub axle collar might aid things. Can this collar be removed? Now it’s a case of where to get a new seal or two tomorrow from a motor factor as I haven’t got time to wait for an internet delivery... I’m near Bracknell. Any suggestions?

I’ve checked I’ve seated the races to the right depth, and I have. Again, perhaps I need to simply work the seal over the collar. That may well be the problem. Time to man up! Oh, and find a new seal that goes in a bit better. Do OEM ones fit better than Bearmach?

An old bearing outer race with an angle grinder split in it makes a good tool for seating the new race's and oil seal.

Now that’s a great tip. I’ll definitley break out the angle grinder tomorrow. I’m still trying to find a local source of seals so I can finish the job ASAP. For once I don’t want to use the Internet!
