200 TDI Timing Cover Dust Seal

Hi All,

I've finally had time to get back to the engine, it's been on the back burner! Any tips on refitting the dust cover to the timing case please - it's been a few days since I took the old one off. Part number is etc4154. I'm buggered if I can even work out which way it's supposed to go in!

if its it used to keep stuff out of housing fit with concave side outwards

Pinching a picture I found elsewhere, which is the only one I can find on the net.

So you put the seal in from the back of the timing cover with the 'lips' facing the front of the cover. You push it in with a socket slightly smaller than the seal?

Do you have to push really hard? I was trying earlier but did not want to go mental in case in case I damaged the seal. Any tips for getting the bugger in? Cheers.

just tap it in using a flat plate etc over seal socket isnt the best way

Is the seal supposed to finish flush with the inside of the timing cover? Mine is sitting about 5mm above and does not want to be persuaded any further.

Looking around online, it seems to be the right seal. I'm stumped if anyone has any ideas - maybe I'm going about it completely the wrong way. It seems such a stupid thing to get stuck on but it's going to hold me up unless I can get it sorted.

Can't, I'm at work. It should be the right seal, it's part of a service timing kit for a disco 200 TDI. Everything else has been fine, so it will be user error.

Do you have your timing cover off yet? If so, a pic of both sides with seal intact would be good - and a pic of your replacment seal alongside

Not yet no, Will be soon, but maybe not for a couple of weeks. Though mines a defender rather than disco engine

First picture, rear of timing cover with seal facing the opposite way to the way I'm trying to push it in.

Second picture, seal pushed in as far as it will go through rear of timing cover.

Looking at the pics, it looks like I should be putting it in the other way around - the way it's pictured in the first pic?
