First post on Landyzone and I'll apologise if anyone thinks that this post should be somewhere else but......are there two different timing / cam belts for the 200TDi engine?

I've seen pictures of the cam belt replacement on the web of what is supposed to be a 200TDi engine and it has no idler pulley, just a tensioner.

When I pulled my son's Disco 1 timing cover off - there's the tensioner, plus an idler pulley and the belt was tight, even with the tensioner bolt undone.

Any clues?

Hi there, I found only one kit for the Tdi200.

Here's a link to a Disco Tdi200 timing belt kit:

Timing Belt Kit - Disco 200TDI

Cheers
Dave

Many thanks for the quick replies chaps.

So that 200TDi kit contains:

Part No. TIMINGKIT200

Kit consists of:

1x ETC8550 Dayco Timing Belt
1x ERR2530 Tensioner
1x ETC8560 Idler
1x ERR1195 Front Cover gasket
1x ERR388 Water Pump Gasket

So what are the pics I've seen that don't have an idler - the timing cover is, to all intents, the same, just without idler.

When I took the belt off it was as tight as a bowstring with the tensioner backed right off - didn't seem right to me.

I'll try to find the pics and put a link in, here's (hopefully) one picture of what is described as a 200TDi, but it doesn't have an idler pulley:

200 has separate auxiliary belts for altenator / fan and PAS pump (and Aircon if fitted).
300 has a single "serpentine" belt.

What year is yer Disco?

Right - this engine has two belts - 200TDi then?

I took a few photo's so someone can just check that it is a 200:

Look at the pulley on the alternator... it's a very narrow V, more like a notch. If it was a 300 it'd be about an inch wide as the serpentine belt is a multi V not a single like the 200.

HTH,

Perplexing, isn't it?

I think I am going to have to take myself to my local LR dealer (!!) and see how the belt that came off compares to whatever they think is right and also a 300 belt.

I can't be exact on the year of this motor - it's my son's vehicle and it's on one of those Irish (?) plates with three letters and four numbers. I think it's a 1991 model.

Adz - yes, the two belts that came off the ancillary drives were just ordinary alternator-type belts, not one of the flat poly-vee types.

Original engine - well that's another mystery. My lad bought it from a friend-of-a-friend and I gather that this was a 'replacement' engine.

Do 200s and 300s have obviously different types of fuel injectors? can I tell the difference by the style of injector?

Yours is definitely a 200 judging by the pictures you posted earlier...

you sure?
look at the rh pic in post #7 - there's an idler to the right of the 2 big pulleys, which the 200 doesn't have, and it looks like your 300 pic.

My bad... I was looking at post 4... which is a 200 ;)

Odd that isn't it?

OK - gearbox... on the gear knob where is the reverse gear? If it's 'push left and forwards' (i.e. to the left of and in the same plane as 1st) it's an LT77 which would suggest either a 200 Tdi or a 300 Tdi 'home upgrade) but if it's 'push right and pull back' (i.e. to the right of and in the same plane as 4th) it's an R380 and almost certainly a 300 Tdi.

Would someone have gone to all the bother of replacing the 200 with a 300 and then converting the crank, alternator and water pump pulleys back to the 200 Tdi ? Certainly looking that way innit?

Have you got the engine number off the block yet? Good chance that will tell us more.

hmmm
not at all sure, but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that a few early 300s had multiple V belts and not the serpentine that most of them have.
