200 tdi sudden loss of handling, rear end swaying all over place,,i,m worried

oh and will my propshaft just pop back in or is it likely to be pumped?

id swap the axle personally, there is no way the axle can be that strong if the brackets have snapped

did you drain the axle and take drum off before welding?
can you do this job from a jack or do i need a ramp?
and how did your son line up the new ones?
i presume the new ones have to go exactly where the old ones were,

This was the problem

I got these weld-on brackets from a local Indy for £12 each (I suspect that he got them from Paddocks)

I spent a happy hour and a half grinding off the old brackets and my son them came around and welded them on for me

All I need to do now is paint them.

and how did your son line up the new ones? Bolted the bracket to the trailing arm before welding. Also, after grinding off the old bracket, there were still "witness" marks where it had been.

Check bushings, if they are all corroded and falling to bits, this can also cause it.

lining up the axle will not be to hard with and assistant
you will need level concrete and 4 axle stands
lift the chassis a little and put stands under it. make sure they are same hieght.
this is to have it level while lining the diff up.
now measure from centre of front ub to centre of rear on both side.
adjust position of diff and check. repeat till in line.
now you can compair the mount location to old weld marks.
this will get you on the right track

Make sure the weld is very good and with good penetration .... you where lucky it gave way just going over a speed bump - now imagine that it gave way at speed with your wife and sprog with ya ........ .

Dont want to scare you too much but its bloody important its done right .
