Hi guys, I have a problem with my 200 TDI. I have replaced the lift pump as the engine would only run for a couple of minutes and then it would die. I’m trying to restart it with belch white smoke which I think is under fuel when I bleed the fuel filter, I can get fuel spirting out, but when I stop pumping, the fuel seems to disappear from the filter any help would be much appreciated, especially on a wet rainy day down in Cornwall

Hi lynall thank you for your reply. no recent work done recently The problem started after having my Land Rover back from being worked on by my mechanic. I did actually tell a Cornish man there was no rush and do it directly. If you ever been to Cornwall. You’ll know what this means the Land Rover had a full tank of fuel when it was dropped off at the garage, but some bugger must’ve siphoned the fuel off so I had obviously picked up air in the system when I discovered that the fuel tank was empty refilled with fuel clean the filter on the bottom of the pick up bled the system got it running had no issues. recently had issues with clouds of white smoke and it stalling and refusing to start I have replaced the lift pump with a Brit tank part I know the crap but they’re cheap just to see if I can get myself out of the **** pumps fuel fine with the hand pump, but what I’ve noticed is the fuel disappearing from the fuel filter. I’ve looked in where you bleed it from from on the bulkhead and you can see the fuel disappearing down the threads i’m going to replace everything tomorrow fuel line wise you mention the lift pump being on upside down. Do you mean the lever on the wrong side of the cam?

All the Britpart lift pumps we have fitted leak through the thread for the inlet and outlet pipes, I wrap the threads in ptfe tape (rightly or wrongly)

Also check the wire connection on the stop solenoid is good and secure as this could cause a stalling/non start issue.
Is not white smoke unburnt diesel?
Or coolant maybe.
How old is the fuel filter, my son gets 6 months out of his before performance starts to deteriorate.

I would work backwards from the filter then. I doubt your stalling problem is down to the lift pump failing, usually a lack of power but will drive ok.

Air in the system causes white smoke and your symptoms.
Check the return/bleedoff pipes (they loop across the injectors).
Somewhere air is getting in.

Just had a thought, you didn't fit the plastic spacer that comes in the kit with the lift pump as it doesn't need it.
What work did the mechanic do? anything fuel related or anything that might have disturbed the fuel system?

No just welding I’ve had it running with the bleed screw out but no fuel coming out of the hole. Turn the motor off and hand pump the lift pump and i get a good amount of fuel out. I’ve put the plastic spacer in ? Is that correct as it’s never had one in the 30 years I’ve had her.
it’s been very kindly mentioned by Anaconda on here that it doesn’t need one

Pretty sure he says not to put spacer in?Great video seen this guy a few times
And this is why I put the spacer in
3 gaskets he reckons, I used 2 gaskets when I replaced the most recent one.
Hi all today I have fitted a new lift pump new pipe work took out the plastic spacer and replaced it with 3 gaskets as per the video I removed the drain plug on the fuel tank and noticed that the diesel was not coming out very fast removed the filler cap out came the fuel! Then I had a thought was the fuel cap vent blocked? Sure enough it was cleaned out the hole and bingo that was the problem with fuel starvation
. Primed every thing fuel comes out of the bleed hole started her up still had fuel coming out of the bleed screw great problem solved running fine for 5 minutes then back to starvation of fuel 
instead of fuel coming out of the bleed screw it’s now sucking air in (with it undone) can only think I might have the lift pump lever in the wrong position should it be in the up position and if so would this stop the flow of fuel. Thanks again for everyone’s help but I’m at a loss now
