Best for what? Best in what way?

I spent some time asking around people on this one.....

The main thing I learnt was that the 200 was more reliable, less head gasket problems and reasonably easy to get up to 300 power with some tweaks, 300's tend to have some head gasket problems after 135k

With this in mind I bought myself a 200 and now have my very own little steam train, puffs smoke like a goodun when you remove the oil cap when running, lesson learnt ?

aye phantom mine was the same and belching it owt of her ariss but she still pulled mi caravan ,still ran the same you wouldnt of known owt was wrong part from smoke, not many motors woul do that the 200 is the best for mpg

There's too little difference between 'em to make the comparison worthwhile. The best answer is "the cheapest when you buy it"... or "the one in the best condition when you buy it"

200 Tdi Cylinder heads are harder to come by than 300's is the only reason I can think of to buy a 300 over a 200. If it's a factory 300 then it'll be mated to a R380 gearbox, which is potentially another reason to buy it... but if you're buying it to fit the engine into a Defender, then you can't take the gearbox over with it anyway.

300's are marginally quieter than 200's, they're newer so the rest of the car stands a chance of being in better nick... but with that said they'll be more expensive and there's still no guarantee that the chassis isn't shot to bits.

Buy a car with a good chassis and running gear with as little rust and miles on it as you can and worry about the engine last would be my advice.

Cheers,
