Hi all, just want to know your view on the rover 20L D engine in the freelander.
good or bad and are they any good etc, mpg, power would like to hear back
you guys thing.:D

It's a very reliable unit compared to the 1.8 petrol unit, it's not bad on fuel ether but it's a sluggish old Hector in the Freelander, although the MG boys are getting over 150bhp out of them now so it's obviously tunable.

Most reliable engine they ever put in the Freelander. As long as your IRD and VCU is good then any L series car will be a good bet :).

Good diesel engine but now in a 12+ years old car so expect all the old freelander faults :dizzy:

You mean like VCU and IRD? Mine is a 2004 and it's just as likely to suffer from it if I was to be stupid and ruin it ;). Apart from general servicing and making sure electrics etc are ok you'd be good with an L series.

Things like sunroof not working or rusting away , window cables breaking , rear handle coming off in your hand because the bolts rot and plastic is brittle

Most cars are knackered at 12+ years, its built in and part of the throw away world we live in - unfortunately!!

I had the same engine in a rover 25 @ 200k miles, good engine though slight annoyances include problems with air flow meters (ended up with it removed a lot of the time), make sure both of the belts are changed - main timing belt and there is a second timing belt at the opposite end for the fuel pump which snapped on me though no damage. Also never did get the serpentine belt to stop squealing. Leak off hoses perish, one of the glow plugs can be very difficult to access, but all in all recommended. Excellent economy, plenty of torque low down.

Thanks lads for all your comments, i was hoping it would be good.
How i know, is there a thread on the forum on the Lseries engine.

I had a k series freelander and i changed the hg and thermostat , and has you say
it was the drive train that lets them down.
i had a whine in the trans fare box on the 18 petrol one , so sold it on.
i have noticed on the L series that i have now the temp gauge stays at the bottom, but the heater still works, what would cure this problem.

Change the temperature sensor on the engine?
