I’ve had 2 mechanics look at my Freelander 2 and they’re not sure what a knocking rattle that occurs in the near side front area under passenger seat. This only happens when I take my foot off the accelerator.
There is another noise which is a whine at higher speeds and when the vehicle has been driving for at least 20 mins. Sounds like it could be coming from the rear diff. I was told that the rear diff seemed fine but might need more oil.
Any idea what these noises might be?

The haldex pump on the rear diff can fail. Eggsperianced Freelander 2 owners change the haldex oil every 20k miles. They change the filter every 40k miles. The bearing in the rear diff can fail. It will benefit from an oil change.

Do the noises change if you steer left or right?

Thanks very much for your thoughts- I don’t think it changes with direction but will check. I’m new to Freelanders so appreciate your opinion. Any thoughts about the sound coming from the front, wondering if it could be to do with play in the drive shaft joint or that area.

Not sure. Is there any vibration with the knocking sound? Put someone on the back seat to see if they think the noise is behind or in front of them? Also get someone to stand outside while you drive past to see if they can hear it.
