Im in the process of researching how to achieve better clearance underneath my disco Mk1. I was origonally looking at putting the largest radius tyres I could fit on with a bit of arch trimming (As per the tyre size guide included on this site). I think according to the guide this is a 235/75 R16. I need new tyres anyway as ive got a slow puncture and the tread is not as fierce as it once was.

However I am now looking at incorporating a 2" lift and then putting on ever larger radius tyres. (Still with arch trimming).

So ive looked at about 100 posts on here and other sites giving details of lift kits, springs, shocks, dislocation cones etc etc. Ive also been told by a friend that I could achieve a 2" lift purely by changing the rear springs to the front and buying 2 new springs for the rear.

What Im after then is a conclusive recomendation on the best way to give me the room to put large diameter tyres on (To achieve maximum axle / diff clearance). I want to spend as little money as possible, but want a robust solution for 95% off road use. I doubt Ill ever lift higher so im not worried about future proofing it.

Then I could do with a recomendation of a max tyre size and ideas of where to buy from. At the moment im looking at the Grizzly claw tyres from Bronco 4x4. (I have however read mixed reviews or their service).

Sorry to ask so much in one go, but all the advice out there is so mixed and conflicting. There must be a few people out there who have done exactly what I want to do ???

Thank you very much in advance for any advice. :whoosh:

Hi,
I put a 2 inch lift kit on my 300tdi last year-a Pro Comp 9000 shock/spring combo with extended braided brake lines(essential)a set of dislocation cones is a good idea too.At present i'm running 245/70 BFG A/T's with no problems(remember to wind out the steering stops)I did try 265/75's but with no body mods they soon fouled the arches!Remember why you want to raise the body by 2 inches-to gain better articulation-don't loose all that extra space by filling it with huge tyres!
I'd rather stick to the better tyres in the correct size than go down the "big is better"route.
Hope this helps
Ade
