I'm puzzled as to why the noise has returned after replacing the front prop.
You said it disappeared when you removed the front prop and ran in 2wd - yes?
Then you replaced the front prop with a cardon type and the noise returned - yes?
I'd have thought that, if there was a problem with the rear prop, the noise would still have been there when you were running with the front prop off.
Is the replacement front prop new or second hand?
Is the noise exactly the same as before, or has replacing the front prop reduced it?

Have a close look at all propshaft UJs - can you see "shiny" patches on the yoke edge where it has been binding?

Another possibility is that you have a problem with the front diff input bearing. If that were worn, it would cause the noise when under load, but when the propshaft was removed, it wouldn't have been under load.

You and me both.
It did dissappear however i had no noise for the first week off running the lift then it appeared and removing the prop made the noise disappear. Now i am wondering if the rear has worn.
The front prop is new.
The noise is as loud but seems to have moved.
I will crawl underneath now and have another good look and come back to you.
thanks again

Interesting one! I have just driven the car with diff lock engaged with both props still in and there is no noise! Any ideas? At least this explains why the noise disappeared when i removed the front prop as diff lock was engaged.

Well, that points to a problem with the transfer box.
I think if I were you I'd try removing the rear prop and see what happens. However, you'll still be running in diff lock, so it might not tell you too much.

Is the oil in your transfer box fresh / the correct type / the correct level?

Yep oil is correct and recently changed and the level is good to.
As you say i wont get the noise with diff lock engaged anyway. I have notice recently that it is difficult to disengage diff lock to.

Well removed the rear prop now and engaged diff lock and driven with just the new front prop in and the noise is there again. Starting to point at the transfer box?
or the front diff.

I'd try dropping the front prop, jacking the front end up and spinning the front wheels and heaving on the front diff input flange to see if there's any play or roughness.

Will try that! However there was no noise when i drove the car with the front prop out. Also couldn't feel any play in the front input flange.
yea - just clutching at straws really.
changing the t/f box is a pita and an expense, so better to be absolutely sure that's what it is.
