2.8 trooper engine into my 90 pics & progress (and headaches!)

I'd guess the landy

Well that's what I thought he was going on about tbh !
But the question threw me as I put some pics on of my Evo engine that punching some power out.
As for the landy engine change, I don't need to do anything to it as it already had a trooper engine in it that started knocking, so it's just a straight swap. The only thing I've got to do is unbolt the conversion plate off the old engine for the LR gearbox to be able to bolt to the Isuzu engine.
Only reason I'm taking the box out is Coz the output shafts on the transfer box have loads of play in them and when I put oil in it, it looses all within a couple of days it's that bad.
Down to the previous owner driving it with knackered UJ's in the propshafts. It was a bit of a dog when I got it, loads of things wrong with it.

Yeah landy lol who cares about the evo!

Okay cool didn't realise it was a straight swap

What power does the trooper produce? I think I have the evo and trooper engine figures muddled?

Lol !
Not got an exact figure for the trooper engines pal, but I'd say around 100Bhp-115Bhp.
The old engine was screaming it's guts out on the motorway at around 60, so hoping that a disco transfer box is gonna sort that out a bit Coz someone has told me that they have different ratios than a denfender.
Does anyone know if this is true or not ? Oh, and will it even bolt up or am I just wasting my time ?

Usually they are 1.2 where as defender is 1.4 and you can also get 1.6. I like my standard 1.4 for bigger wheels although it's whining alot in reverse

What size tyres are you running on yours pal ?
So a 1.2 ratio will give you more top end rather than acceleration.?

Only 265s but I plan on going up to 33s or maybe 35s soon
Finally got the box out last night thank god !

Can anyone tell me if the transfer box just unbolted from the gear box casing ?
Or is there anything in the back of the transfer box in the big round removable plate (pto) that has to be undone first ?

I've got an old auto box that I'm gonna take the transfer box off and fit it to my defender gearbox.
They look the same.
Anyone shed some knowledge?

PTO doesn't need touching to split tcase off gearbox, remove the bolts and nut off the stud at rear side, then there are 2 bolts on the gearbox side.

got the tbox off tonight, spent a few hours after work and swapped them over. Only thing I had to change the brake drum carrier as the auto box was out of a disco, oh and remove the sender for the speedo drive.
Got it back in place and bolted up on the back mounts

the only other thing I was concerned about was the output shafts on the end of the gearboxes once I'd removed the transfer box, slightly different and one was a little longer, but it bolted up ok and the gearbox spun the transfer box.

The pics above was the auto box out of the disco.
And the pic below was on the manual defender box

You can see the obvious sings aswel that one had a bolt in the end and the other had a thread on the end for a nut to go on

Wonder why that is with the gearboxes
Not got a clue, there was about 10mm difference in the length but they mated back up together ok and the gearbox is spinning the transfer box fine.
I'll o ly know when I get it back in the road and road test it !

This engine change is not as straight forward as I'd of liked it to be !
PROBLEM after problem !
Main headache at the moment was the spigart shaft bearing.
Totally different, my old engine has had a steel collar that's been machined to fit in place where the bearing should go, then this has a bronze collar in it the slips over the input shaft on the box, had to heat it up to get it out it was that right of a fit, then the bronze collar wouldn't fit inside it then so had to mess around for 2 hours trying to get it back into shape so it would fit back in on the new engine.

I took a red hot jetwash to the chassis and paint work while I've waiting for the clutch aswell to try and get as much of the old layers of paint off it ready for a respray, if I could get it all right down to it original primer, I'd leave it like that as its does acctually look like duck egg blue ! Lol
I'm starting to think this 90 may have belonged to the coast guard and it's spent half of its life on a beach some where, Coz when I took the crossmember off below the gearbox, it revealed a hole in the chassis, I'm not too bother tho as its the only bit of rot on it to be fair, but the chassis was half full with very clean beach sand ! Plus while I've taking the paint down off it, I've come across bright florescent green/yellow paint same as the cost guards use

Still not finished this project yet !
It’s not got much further than the engine back in and built back up but not touched the paint work yet !
It’s just been parked up but in the last few weeks I’ve pulled the dash out of it and removed the broken wiper arm spindle boxes and Motor ready for some new ones. Then once the dash is in I’m going to paint it in U-pol Raptor. Done my mates 90 in it for him and it looks good
