2.5TD cutting out

I have just got a 1986 2.5td 90 and it is cutting out. I have changed the lift pump and was fine for about 10 miles and then it started doing it again. This is the second lift pump and its done the same thing twice - is there anything else I can try?

checked the fuel filter/ fuel shut off solenoid ?

It's had a new fuel filter in the last year but not sure where the fuel cut off is?

It's the thing with the wire coming off at the top of the pump and it looks a bit like a temperature sender.

Air getting into the system is a major killer on these engines. Lucas injection pump just gives up at the thought of even a bubble of air.

Thanks for your help. It was a poor connection on the cut off wire connecting the to the top of the injection pump.

Hi,

You will enjoy this one:

My 2.5td defender is a bit rough starting as we had a bit of light frost the other morning> when i mange to get it started and its been running a few minutes (not Cold) i try and turn the fan on to clear windowns on heat and the engine strts to struggle and then stall as soon as it starts to happen i turn the fan to off and it starts to come back to life if i do it quick enough. all other electrics are fine wipers lights and radio. these cold mornings are killing me

Please help.

If you hold the revs up a bit on the throttle will that keep it going?

No, the pedal doesnt seem to operate the engine revs when it starts to die as soon as i take the load of the engine with the clutch down then it will rev. my mechanic mate thinks my ignition barrel has gone or somthing to do with the starter solenoid or somthing....

Check the fuel tank breather - if it's blocked, it will cut out then start again a coupla mins later like there was no problem...till the next time!

Won't be the starter, once it's started it's started and the stater could be removed for all the engine cares.

To test his theory of the ingnition barrel, find the wire towards the back of your injection pump and disconnect it.

Get a live feed from the battery or back of the alternator or something and put that onto the terminal on the pump. What you have now done is taken the igntion barrel out of the equation, the pump will run until YOU disconnect that live feed.

Now go and start the engine, problem solved?

iv got an on going problem with the fuel tank presureising, i need to change the boost diaphram i think thats a job for the weekend. i managed to cure the problem with it cutting out, the 2 wires coming from the injection pump took thos off gave the terminals a clean and a re-crimp and it hasnt cut out since, now it runs like dream (kind of)
