I've recently picked up a 2.5 diesel which came out of a dead landy to put in my rebuilt S2swb.
I assumed it was a 12J nad, or possibly even a 19J, but now that I've scraped the sh*t off the engine number I find to my surprise it's 15J054.
Does anybody recognise this number and advise how it relates to the 12 and 19?

its the same as the NAD with a few differences. it would have been made for LDV vans or rover equivs. or something. i think these were made a little stronger than normal land rover engines. there isnt much info on the net. someone here will know though... just wait till they spot the post :)

Interstingly the 15J Sherpa engine (LandRover through and through) was rated about 10% more powerful than the actual LandRover version.

From the way Discomania's 90 goes on its 15J, I could believe that.

The injection pump on the 15J sits a good bit higher than the LandRover version.

The cambelt cover is a simple sheet steel plate, so it is a lot less watertight than the alloy landy belt cover. However, in the 15J you can do the belt (change or tension) without undoing the waterpump or even draining the system.

Remember the 15J uses a different cambelt from the LandRover version.

It goes very well indeed... Will take on motorway traffic no problem.

Many thanx all. Presumably if I follow the service instructions for the 12 and 19 I won't go too far wrong?

Yes, I have the Haynes and I just follow the 12J more or less, its a little different come the timing belt, it does NOT use the same as the LR version.

For future information this is the belt you would want: Engine Parts

Note it is a 124tooth belt, as apposed I believe to 128 on the LR belt.
