I've got an original 1986 radiator from my 2.5NA 90.
It's not in bad nick with no leaks but the top and bottom (steel) mounting panels are badly rusted.
I'm thinking about changing these, they look like simple folded channels but how are they fixed to the copper core? Are they just crimped on?
Anyone ever had a go at this?
Seems a shame and expensive to junk an otherwise good rad!

I don't fully understand what you mean by the mounting panels are rusting as I don't have any experience with a 2.5NA. But I would say I agree with you about trying to keep the original. I changed the original Rad in my 1990, 200tdi about two years ago. I purchased a new replacement for about £80. When removing the old one I couldn't help noticing how solid and heavy the original one was compared to the new one. I can see why the old one lasted 25 years. The new one will not last anywhere near that. I have kept the old one which I will get recore at some point ready to be put back in when the new one gives up.

Thanks for replies
Basically what I'm trying to swap is shown in pics above.
The rad has a copper core, 2 brass (?) tanks each side and sheet steel frame members on top and bottom.
I have now removed 1 of them which was crimped on and soldered to the copper fins (not the coolant channels). It came off easily as the rust had made the solder joint ineffective. I'm now going to fold 2 new parts, probably out of stainless and crimp back on. Won't bother with the solder but may but some adhesive in there just for extra help.
I'll let you know how I get on if anyone's interested?
Cheers
Andy
