Happy New Year All,
Further to previous post my P38 diesel engine died. Took head off and in process of checking bottom end timing chains and any damage in crank case. Just had couple of queries please:

1. Can the crankshaft front pulley be removed with normal removal tool or do RR devise some special tool?

2. I am renewing sprockets and chains. Any tips on resetting the timing or just follow Rave?
3. I may get a specialist to rebuild the head. Does the sprocket on head go on a certain way as no markings?

Thanks.

You need to follow RAVE all is contained in there.

I am following it. Have bit of hassle getting crankshaft pully off all bolts etc are off just trying to get the pulley off itself.

I am hoping to chains have skipped as head and cylinders show no obvious signs of decay.

Thanks.

Wammers is the expert. There are some special tools for holding the crank, and for the tensioner and so forth. There are bright links on the chains for lining up the timing.

Jimllshiftit did his recently. Threads by Kapilumi and maybe johnnycrash will probably cover most situations.

I made a tool for holding the crank while you undo the pulley bolt. Make sure the bolts that mount the tool to the pulley are not too long otherwise they will bugger the front oil seal.
