Has anyone gutted their Rangies’ Cat on BMW 2.5 Diesel (MAF engine)
Until recently a 300TDI Disco and after having performed said delicate surgical procedure and had it’s inners taken out she had more go and used less fuel, and always passed the emissions test
Unlike petrol engines in the UK there is no law which states diesels must have a Cat
The unit on my 2.5 DT looks identical to the unit in the Disco, but are there any Lambda sensors on it which would cause problems if I did have it ‘scooped’ :eek:

As far as I know there are no cats on older diesels, they are 'smog filters' so scooping out the insides gives better gas flow.

There are no sensors on the pre and post 'cat type box' as even if there were how would they ajust the fueling with an almost completely mechanical injection pump?

Could be a different story on a fully electronic common rail diesel though.
 
I've always thought that the main problem with the BMW diesel is the turbo doesn't kick in at low enough revs, could be because the 'cat' in the downpipe is too restricting, the back pressure doesn't allow the turbo to spin up when required. An open downpipe should help this and I believe that's what the diesel tuning firms offer with their sports systems.

Let us know if it does make a difference.
