hello my inlaw has bought a p38 with the bmw engine in it he has just changed the idlers, harmonic balancer and belts for the fan and alternator, now when it starts it will run for about 4-5 seconds and cut out with quite a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust, he has had a guy out who has tested the electrics on it and it came back with no fault codes and all the senders check out ok, when it cuts out there is a lot of clicking noises coming from around the fip but I couldn't track it down, he has had the inlet manifold off and gave it a good clean along with the intercooler but there is no obvious air leaks, anyone got any ideas?
thanks dan

They will idle quite happily with the manifold off so it will not be that.
Harmonic balancer? Do you mean the crank pulley torsional vibration damper? If so, was the crank bolt undone? If it was it needs to be done up to some enormous torque figure or the oil pump will not be driven.
Otherwise it may be coincidental, check the wire to the stop solenoid on the FIP, check the fuel filter and in tank pump, I assume there is fuel in the tank?

Yes there is fuel in the tank and the pump in the tank is working also I have taken the stop solenoid out and tested that is also fine, there is a good supply of fuel coming into the fip I'm a bit lost as where to go next could it be a mechanical problem with the fip? I would of thought that this would of brought up a fault code?

Could be a FIP fault, could also be contaminated fuel.
