Ive seen that the 2.5 NA are cheaper (am looking at 90's) but Nic really does appreciate the 2.5 td in his 90. I'm only 16 and was looking for just a cheap little runabout when i turn 17 march next yr but i really really like the land rover. I'm prepared to compromise and wait until i have a little more money to spend late 07 early 08 (cough cough LR's 60th 08;)) and get a 90 - dont think a series III is easy enough for a newbie to landys and driving itself....so i got a little off topic but if they are good and, more importantly to me at the moment, cheap I may consider it. Oh and any info generally on 1st landy's what to do/not to do etc etc would be GREATLY appreciated Cheers Jonathon

eh! what? you sed 111's wint easy fer beginners i was just saying they don'-t get much easier... but yer probelly better wiff a 90 as its a bit more comfartable.. insurance wise i wouldn't have thought thur was much in it. yer 111's is best fer learning in as its more of a handful to drive therefore teaching you things that a more modern vehickle wont.

Thanks slob..me thinks i better frequent the series forum more than t defender one i spend most of my life in at the moment. did you do the lake district greenlaning weekend??. Oh and av just thought to look at wot u drive an you would encourage me to get a series III wouldnt you;) so wot else can ya tell or shud i jus move forums
cheers Jonathon

I am finding anything below 60 mph, needs 4th gear unless it is absolutely level (or downhill.)[/FONT]
Drop below 50, and really start looking for 3rd !!!

Wow, I don't think I have ever gone faster than about 35mph in 3rd.

I try and change at speeds the syncros need to do no work, so in mine I am in 1st till about 13mph, then into 2nd, which will take me to about 19, and then 3rd takes me to about 29 then I stay in 4th as best I can in the city.

You know you've got your gearchanges bang on when you don't need to use the clutch.

The gears work out to be about 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 miles per 1000rpm respectivly in my LT77. The 2.5 is probally not happy going much over 3000rpm, which is about 75mph in 5th.

Thanks Discomania,

I did feel I was possibly over doing it a tad.

Seems I was changing at about the 3,000 rpm mark, using the gear ratios you've supplied. Haynes manual states 67 BHp at 4,000 rpm. :(

Will try and calm down, and shift at the points suggested.

Just feel at times I've got my foot to the floor and it's still decelerating.

Thanks again, appreciated. :)

if anyone else is looking for gear ratios..

found a comprehensive site covering them here

Land Rover gear ratios

So with a Diff Ratio of : 3.54:1

(LT230) Transfer Ratio of 1.67:1 (in high)

(LT77) And Gear Ratios of:

1st___3.590
2nd___2.300
3rd___1.507
4th___1.000
5th___0.830

with 31/10.5R15 tyres I estimate (as can't confirm actual rolling radiuis of these imperial settings) speeds to be:

Gear\RPM___1st_____2nd_____3rd_____4th_____5th___
1000_______4_______7_______11_____16______19____
2000_______9_______14______21_____32______38____
3000_______13______21______32_____48______58____
4000_______18______28______42_____64______77____

So changing @ 3,000 rpm, matches quite nicely with shift points suggested by Discomania.

PS.
It's been a lot easier to drive in the last few days whilst there hasn't been gale force winds. happily cruising at 55 mph now :D

What a strange site to find that info, total hippy but reckon she is probably well sound and interesting. Is it ur mum ;)

I used to have a 90 with the 2.5 n/a and it was great for trundling round country lanes and offroading, if you go on the motorway it will reach 70-75 if its a good one but is happy at 55-60 and will take quite awhile to get there !! I brought mine up from Derbyshire to Fife in Scotland and even climbing to the top of the Shap summit it never dropped below 55. So as long as speed is not important I would give it a chance before you change it.

Mine does 70! so i'm happy

Yea, since I fitted my new air filter mine has done 75 easy (not let it go any further yet) and it pulls up hills like a bloody train in 5th no problem now, should have changed that filter months ago!

Right I am off to play with my toys...
