I've got what I believe to be a 12J N/A deisel in my 1979 109" series 3.

Apart from a choked fuel filter at the sender unit it has been pretty trouble free since buying the Landy in March of this year. That is until yesterday!

There I was "racing" along holding a respectable 50ish mph when she just seemed to gradually lose power and slowly dropped down to a struggling 30 mph. As I know there is quite a lot of work to do with cluch, gear box transfer box and axles I first wondered if it was due to something binding but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Having a play today trying to rev the engine whilst in neutral it doesn't seem to get to full revs and sounds as if it's flat at about half revs. When going out on the road today trying it again the engine stopped abruptly a couple of times immediately after starting then ran. Then within a mile of home she 'topped out' at 40 mph which quickly reduced to 10 mph. She then faultered and stopped. After checking I had fuel at the injectors she started again but failed to reach more than 30 mph and felt very flat.

She has smoked black under accelaration from when I got her.

If anyone can give me any ideas as to where to start looking for a cause I will be very gratefull.

Hi mate if its the same problem i have had it was running fine then over a day went down to a crawl 10 mph .
I changed fuel lines from tank to injector pump changed fuel filter flushed tank and changed lift pump STILL THE SAME .
Advanced pump still the same so removed pipes one at a time while priming the lift pump no blockages .
I have dropped the new lift pump back off and found BRITPART have sent the petrol pump not the diesel one so its snapped the bar that pumps off the cam so not getting right amount of fuel .

your problem sounds like your lift pump or air in pipes or blockage you could have picked crap up out your tank if you read my post in this section i got some good advice hope this helps you .

I had this problem and actually found it was a hose from the air filter collapses when accelerating but when idling it was fine. Might be worth looking at.

:)Hi All,

Thanks for all the usefull sugestions. A member on the LRO forum suggested main fuel filter may be clogged as I'd been getting a fair bit of silt in the pick up gause in the tank.

He was spot on, I'd already bought one a spare to keep in the vehicle as I'd been considering trying veg oil but not got round to it. So I was able to give it a go today without having to spend anything. The old one was full of silt and she's just returned a good 55 mph on a round trip of about 12 miles to collect my daughter and her bike from college.

So looks like a result and another lesson with a N/A diesel, check your fuel flow first!!!

Thank you again for everyone's suggestions.:)
