2.5 GL- Randomly cuts out and wont start again until cold

My Freelander has developed a worsening problem - Started with very occassionally cutting out once warm and not starting again for a couple of mins - then progressed to not starting at all after (say) parking up outside the shop for a few mins. Now it is cutting out more frequently and engine warning light comes on once cut out - car refuses to do anything until cold then starts and runs perfectly again. Car is LPG converted and this problem also makes lpg cut out and cut back in again two or three times during a journey. At speed, car cuts out (falters) then runs again.. If it stalls (ie traffic lights or junction) I have to get out, push it to the kerb and leave it for a few hours to cool down.

Any clues?

These are the worst and most annoying faults but often turn out to have quite simple causes.

My guess is that something electrical is getting hot due to either looseness or corrosion and eventually the circuit fails until the weak point cools and current can flow again, the problem is getting worse.

A clue could be LPG switching in and out?

I would start by checking all electrical connections relative to the LPG installation: Particularly 'scotchloks' ,earth points, fuses and relays for signs of overheating/looseness and corrosion.

does the rev counter jump about when it has these symptoms?

No - rev counter doesnt jump about... if running on lpg, that will cut in and out a couple of times... if running on petrol - it will run fine but park her up and return 30 minutes later and no hope! - Have to wait until engine is cool(er) before she wants to know... temperature guage when running never rises above mid position - engine has done less than 10,000 miles from new.

Do your fuel lines run near your exhaust manifold ? Heat could be evaporating your fuel causing vapour locks.

You could carry a spark tester and then check for an ignition spark when the engine won't start. If the spark is o.k then you're looking for a fuel related fault.

Have been driving the car for last 3 days solely on petrol without a problem - so I am guessing that this is a problem with the LPG system - seems like something is cutting out the lpg fuel feed and wont let petrol take over at the same time? Any lpg installation experts out there?

Seems that LPG ecu is unable to recognise that the engine has stopped due to failed gas flow (possibly faulty gas solenoid valve) once engine has cooled the LPG ecu starts the engine on petrol until temp rises slightly and changeover occurs. LPG ecu's usually have onboard diagnostics. Because of the safety issues involved I would recommend taking the vehicle to an LPG service centre. Good luck.

Dann - that sounds very feasible to me - I will get her to an LPG specialist who has the correct diagnostics and let you know how I get on - thanks mate...

Nothing to do with the LPG folks - twas a faulty cam sensor - that was all - new cam sensor and all problems have gone away...

Apparently the ECU in the LPG took its signal from the main ECU and cut the gas off when it didnt hear from the cam sensor - so two probs rather than one....

Hope this solution helps anyone else with similar
