Help needed!!! (2004 Defender TD5)

Hi there,
Apologies if this is not the done thing but we have run out of ideas and winter is fast approaching.

This is a serious challenge and could be quite a journey to get an old girl back on her feet.

Background: car restored over lockdown which required changing bulkhead to repair cosmetic damage all done by my father and me. Defender worked beautifully for a whole year apart from little adaptations to stop drafts and general improvements etc.

Since then: I managed to drive into a hidden rock which cause a big tyre blow out and rocked the car so much so to engage the feul cut off switch.

The problem: since around about this incident a year ago the problems have got worse and worse. It started with if you started the engine with the lights on the engine would cut off after 2 seconds. We would hit the feul cut off and try again and it would normally start. Problem progressed to radio needing to be off to make it start. Then to all electrics to be off when starting to avoid the engine cutting off. Followed by the heater fan control needing to be in a certain spot to be able to start.
We lived with that for a while until that certain sport became so certain we couldn't get it started. We would know if it would start as the instruments would read normally, otherwise the water temperature would read all the way to the red.

Present day: we have taken the dash to bits to check all the earths and electrics and now if you turn the lights on the ignition comes on and apart from that nothing else really works.

Please if you have any suggestions or advice it would be much appreciated. It pains me to see the old girl out of action and we are losing our hair and minds over this issue.

We are stumped

Look forward to hearing some replies

Harry

Well that was a short journey as it happens. Upon tearing the dash board apart we gave up looked at some instructions (not very manly) and saw there was an earth on the bulkhead that we hadn't checked and it was hanging down unattached. We scrapped off the paint and put in a self tapper and now it works perfectly
