All driving fantastic then had very stiff gear change out of 5th and could not get any gears. box wad making few odd rattles but then got 2nd gear when speed had dropped. pulled into layby and stopped. I could see smoke from under bonnet so had a look. Smoke was billowing from between rear of engine and gearbox bell housing. It smelt like buring oil. once all had cooled down i started engine up again, i still had good clutch and could select gears, car drives forward and reverse but has odd rattling noise. got AA to recover it home and will investifate this weekend. Does anybody have any good ideas on what problem may be? I know its a P38 and have got ontop of most of the problems but am unsure with this one. Could it be loss of gearbox oil or blocked gearbox oil filters.

All advise appreciated.

Is there any oil in the g/box? if there is it could be oil strainer blocked or oil pump failure. First motion shaft bearing is the first to fail and you won't know till you take it out of 5th as 5th is direct drive ie. drive doesn't go through the layshaft. I've got a gearbox from my friends car in the garage with the same problem. It usually fecks up more than the bearing as the fm shaft seizes/picks up on to its thrust washer and the gear next to the washer. Hope that makes sense. If you take the gearbox out then replace the roll pins in the clutch release fork, cost £2 and will save you having to take the box out again in the near future

A friend?

We're all friends here. Come on. Tell us all about it.

Are you sitting comfortably, then I will begin. He bought a 96 P38 which had never been serviced for years. He kept on driving it until it threw its hand in on the A55 on one of his weekly runs to his caravan in Abersoch. He managed to get it back as it was fine in 5th. I fitted a second hand gearbox he bought and I've stripped the old one down and it lives in my garage. I will probably rebuild it, new set of bearings, oil pump, first motion shaft shim and anything else it needs and keep it as a spare.:)

Had a look at the stripped gearbox yesterday, besides the first motion shaft bearing it had knackered the 1st/2nd syncro hub, roller bearing and the bush, thats the one on the right in the photo, compared with the reverse/5th hub. I probably will not rebuild the box unless anyone out there has one that needs a new home. Bugger, cannot upload the photo, being told its too big for the server to process. Never had this problem before.:(

Nice quiet job in the old days box out, strip, to stores for parts rebuild box back in. Now it's box out and off to a gearbox specialist. Mechanicing is being deskilled more and more each day. :(:(

I've got a bit of noise on overrun but I think it's the t/box. I have a spare so I think I will get a rebuild kit for the g/box and do both at once just for piece of mind.:)

Maybe, but noise on oveerrun is usually pinion bearings. When crown wheel is driving pinion and the mesh angle changes. Hence the noise.
Quite right, I do have a bit of lift in the output bearings of the t/box so it needs changing. Bit of noise while accelerating as well, nothing when feathered so will check the diffs as well. :)
