I have an oil leakage from the engine sump gasket in my 2.5 DSE.
I read through RAVE and it looks like a straightforward job but it mentions to "fill front and read openings in gasket with sealant".
Since I don't have the gasket yet I'm assuming that what to fill will be clear and that a regular gasket sealant will do ?

Also, and after searching through LZ, there was some talk about not using the gasket at all and just applying gasket sealant (though this was for other engines). Can someone shed some light on this ? Is it better than following RAVE and using a new gasket ?

Cheers

They mean the points fore and aft where the front case and rear oil seal gaskets meet the sump. Hylomar best for this job. Getting sump back up can be a tad fiddly. Use a gasket.

Ah, I get it now.
I recon the sump will be heavy. My idea is to use a block of wood and a trolley jack to position it near the bottom of the engine, apply Hylomar, put some bolts on (maybe longer ones ?) to ensure that it goes in place and then lift it up.

You will have to lift the chassis and let the axle hang to get it off and on. Whilst you have it unbolted take it off and wash it out. Getting it back on over oil pickup and into place is quite a fiddle. Clean off the flanges on engine with solvent. Not Paraffin. Apply Hylomar as required to the four locations and leave until dry (half an hour). Then put sump up and torque up. Go over bolts two or three times with torque wrench.

While you have the sump off check for hairline cracks as i had one on my diesel.
the one on mine was lh side of engine looking forward (passenger side on Rh drive)about half way along .
