Looks like my gearbox has failed at 103K. The only real problem with the engine is cracked heads. Personally I think this is connected to overheating due to other problems.

Mines on 150K miles and uses no oil between services and runs great (touch wood) garage that does my MOTs said if looked after correctly then barely run in.
Here's hoping

my local bmw stealer have said to mee that the engine have no problem (if maintained prober) 400000miles
****.... that's good, im impressed, they do say, you look after it well change oil and filters it will see you in good stead, but that is good

Will these engines just keep going and going provided they are looked after??

ha ha ha ha and ha ha yes they will keep going but will need starter motors alternators, fuel injection pumps, fuel pump regular oil changes, fuel filter changes, coolant changes, oil changes, glow plugs, cheap to run they ain't,but will go the distance if looked after,oh and did i mention oil changes lol
mine has done 123,000 miles and needs a new injection pump, this does seem to be a weakness, but once done it brings it basck to like new again.

I've seen one advertised with 500.000km (310k miles) on the original engine.
Mine's got 220k miles on the clock, but with an engine change at around 200k miles.

About 35 (thats miles, not thousands of miles!).....or it was in the case of one that was bought on a farm I did a bit on back in the day. Bought brand new in 98 or 99 , it did not make it back from the dealers to the farm before it threw a rod straight through the side of the block and stopped very suddenly!!
Needless to say a new engine was fitted in double quick time by the appologetic supplying dealer! Upon investigation two oilways had not been drilled right the way through....amazing it lasted as long as it did really!!
