hiya,having had the temp needle creeping up close to the red i,ve decided to drain/refill the coolant but i,m struggling.with only 2 litres of coolant put back in the system won,t take anymore.i,ve tried squeezing all the pipes to no avail.am i missing something?does the engine need to be running?i was gonna fire her up but with only 2 litres in the system i thought it may damage engine.any ideas much appreciated

How much coolant did you drain out? Sounds like you only drained part of the system.
 
not sure data in all honesty,i,ve only drained from the radiator.looking at whats in my drain tank i,d say theres got to be a good 10 litres or so.
 
cheers wammers.i,ve thrown the towel in for now(off to work)i,ll check that first thing,i need the car tommorow afternoon so the pressures on.i,m gonna drain/start allover again.foooking bag of **** i knew i should have left alone.:)
 
cheers lads,bled this morning but problems still there,bottom of rad stone cold:(.it looks like a fairly new tank,i,m wondering if the previous owners bought one of these dodgy tanks.what do you reckon
 
To correctly enpty the system of coolant you must remove the drain at the bottom of that radiator and remove the drain bolt from the cylinder head.

If you do not remove the drain bolt from the cylinder head you will not get the system empty.

Follow the instructions in RAVE, it's easy.

Dodgy Rads with the centre baffle missing seem to be common. I bought a scrapper for spares with an overheating problem. Turned out to be the RAD. Previous owner had forked out hundreds on water pump, stat and head gasket replacement only for the garage to say "cracked head" Now I'm thinking of doing it up:D
 
Well I have found with my past experiences,that make sure when you drain coolant to do so of the radiator and engine block. When filling add some before engine is warm. Then turn heater on defrost/ high,with the engine running fill up to your max keeping the lid off watch your coolant when the thermostat opens, you will then see your coolant drop meaning it opened successfully and engine is at normal running temp. Nowfill to max once again or until it holds steady at the right level with the cap on.

If OP was still struggling 7 years later, I imagine they'd have given up DIY and paid a man to do it. ;D

Yep and why would you put heater on full, flow through that is constant and cannot be turned on and off. No heater valve. Nice try though. Other than that welcome Landyrich05. ;)
